Vault 213

The photograph shows vault 213 on the left of the two vaults; that on the right was designated vault 209.
At this stage of the excavation all the burials and finds, thus far, had been removed and stored on site for examination and recording.
Notice the high quality of the brickwork on the side. This suggests the ground level has remained much as it was when the vault was first built and that it was the intention of the owners that the vaults should remain covered. The entrance to vault 213 itself was sealed with a stone slab which rested upon 3 - 5 courses of bricks at the base. It seems likely that this was the second "door"; the first being replaced when the lower level was full
