Number 66 Sedgley Road – better known as “The
Penn 66 Club” – has enjoyed a mixed history.
Circa 1920 it was owned by Mr Rolleson.
Circa 1948 it was run by Tom and Olive Hickman but was closed down by the police not long after because of after-hours drinking. They were informed upon by Mr Bill Deckit (a Special Constable) who lived in “The Cottage” (now Peddlers’ Well) in Chamberlains Lane.
After this incident it was used as a domestic residence but the wife of the
family left her husband and moved to the USA. In the next chapter it became
known as The Penn 66 Club. Many well known acts appeared there including
The Ivy Benson Band, and The Tommy Burton Combo. It closed in the late
fifties mainly through pressure from neighbours after it had become a gambling
house and a strip club.
